This is a story of a young boy, his family and the small town in which he lives. It is a story of tragedy. It is a story of love. It is the story of an incredible boy, born out of catastrophe, nourished by the love of his family and the concern of his community.
Neil Halford was born and raised in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. At the age of two, he was kicked in the face by a horse and was blinded for life. Today, he is twenty-nine years old. He is married to his high school sweetheart and they have two beautiful children.
Like many others with physical challenges, Neil chose to overcome his handicap. However, his story is unique. Neil developed an extraordinary sense of hearing which is much more acute than that of most blind people. This enabled him to live and compete in the sighted world from a very young age. He not only competed, he excelled. During high school, Neil was a medallist at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament. During college, Neil was selected as the "Fastest Skier on the Mountain" at the John Elway Ski Race.
Neil’s life journey is truly a triumph of the spirit. Faced with a tragedy few of us could withstand, he not only survived, but he achieved remarkable success, competing in the sighted world. It is a moving, heartbreaking and insightful story of a child’s victory over adversity.
